What Is Class-Compliant USB Audio?

Class-compliant means a USB audio device works with no special drivers. It follows a shared standard that phones and computers already understand, so you just plug it in and it works. That one property is the whole reason it matters for recording on an iPhone or iPad. Here is what it means and how to check for it.

A shared language your phone already speaks

A class-compliant USB audio device follows the standard USB Audio Class, a shared language for audio over USB. Because it speaks that standard, the host, your phone or computer, already knows how to talk to it. There is nothing to install.

The opposite is a device that needs its own driver software before it will work. On a computer you can install that driver. On a phone you usually cannot, which is where this all becomes important.

Why it matters for iPhone and iPad

iOS does not let you install third-party audio drivers. So for an audio interface or a USB instrument to work with an iPhone or iPad at all, it has to be class-compliant. That is the single spec to check before you buy something to record with on a phone.
